Bob Hope will be honored with a 44-cent postage stamp Friday in ceremonies aboard the USS Midway in San Diego.

Hope made two appearances aboard the Midway in a career launched in the 1930s and including military shows from World War II to the Persian Gulf. He died in 2003 at age 100. His widow, Dolores Hope, celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

The post office has printed 100 million stamps featuring Hope and they are on sale nationwide.

Hope starred on stage, radio, television and film for more than seven decades and was the first person recognized by Congress as an honorary veteran of the United States Armed Forces, even though he never officially served in the military.

Brothers, here is the agenda and other info for the Nashville reunion. If you haven’t made your reservations yet, try to do so.  We can have a good time and renew old friendships.

The following update was received from Wayne Gallant.

Here is an update on our reunion plans.  We are having our reunion for the 540th TC, 79th TC, and all the other 14th Trans Battalion units at the Radisson Hotel at Opryland in Nashville TN and here are the details:

Radisson Hotel 2401 Music Valley Drive Nashville TN 37214 Our reunion room rate is $94.00 per night plus tax For RESERVATIONS CALL: 615-889-0800 or 1-800-333-3333 and be sure to tell them you are coming for the reunion and tell them which company you were in (540th, 79th 604th, 608th, 335th, AVEL, etc.).

The core reunion days are November 7-9 2008 with a buffet dinner (roast sirloin and chicken marsala) on the evening of the 8th, the cost is $37.00 for a single and $70.00 for a couple.  There will be a mixer on Friday night and a business meeting on Saturday morning.  I’m working with the hotel concierge to have tours and entertainment available for those who want to see more of Nashville.  The reunion room rate is good from November 4 through November 10 so you can come early and stay late to take in all of the home for Country and Western.

We have 75 rooms blocked at our special rate and 25 are taken already; so now is the time to start planning on coming to Nashville and make your reservation.  I hope a lot of the 540th guys (my old outfit) get signed up and join the 79th Vets already signed up (hint).  We have opened the reunion to the entire 14th Trans Battalion Vets who served with us in Vietnam, some of you with multiple tours may see old friends from other units.  I am also sending snail mail invitations to the former unit commanders for those I can track down (we had four commanders in 2006 at Reno).

Finally mail your check payable to 14th Transportation Battalion AVN Vietnam Veterans for the meal costs and to join our Association the cost is $25.00 per year, again payable to 14th Trans Bn Vietnam Vets. Ronald W Prewitt left the following  message on ‘about this site and why I set it up’.  Anyone that can help him locate the guy that was with him and Captain Laird’s daughter, please contact him.  Here is Ron’s email address:  ronwp53@yahoo.com

I am trying to find the CO of the 79th during Oct. 1970. There was a Captain James Laird who drowned on Oct. 31, 1970 and I was with him on that day. I was a truck driver in the 749th. On that day I was driving and another one of our guys, Stan Kirby, was riding shotgun with me. We were caught in a flash flood and had to stop. We were picked up, off the top of the load, and flown back to the base. We both talked to the CO and he decided to send us and two other guys and to retrieve the truck. It was us four and Captain Laird was put in charge of the recovery. When we returned we were dropped off about 100 yards from the truck and had to walk across the levy to get to the truck. About half way across, the captain lost his footing and was swept away by the current. Kirby dove in after him and then one of the other guys was swept away. That left me and one other guy. I really want to talk to the guy that was left with me. Also the Captain’s daughter wants to talk to anyone who was there with her father that day. She has a post on the wall with her e-mail but it doesn’t work, so I’d like to find her and let her know how her dad died. He died carrying out an impossible mission and with a great deal of honor and bravery. Any help that anyone can give me to find and contact these people will be forever appreciated.

Hi, I’m Vietnamese. My mom’s dad was a US soldier in the Vietnam war. As far as I know he was stationed in Nha Trang, and for most of my life my mom and I have been looking for him. We have no pictures of them as they were burned after the war was over, out of fear of execution. We also don’t know his name. All we really know was that he was an American. I was wondering if you know any ways that might help my mom and I find him. Your help would be greatly appreciated by both my mom and I.

Wayne visited my site a few days ago.  He left a comment that intrigued me.  He said “Lou and I slept in the same hooch, just about three years apart.”  It took a visit to Wayne’s site and a return visit to Lou’s site to make the connection.  Both were stationed at the SATCOM Station in Bin Tan, just at different times.
