Bob Hope

Bob Hope’s 1970 Christmas tour of Vietnam brought him to Long Binh.  He was accompanied by, Les Brown & his Band of Renown,  Miss Universe, Jennifer Hosten, Lola FaLana, Johnny Bench, the Gold Diggers, and others whose names I can’t recall.

As I was standing behind a row of barb wire near the back of the stage,  the medics were bringing in the ambulatory troops to be seated up front.  I noticed a medic pushing one wheel chair and pulling another. When I saw that the MP’s guarding the entrance weren’t  looking, I jumped the wire and grabbed the second chair.  I offered to give him a hand.  That is how I got my great seat for the show.

I took some black and white photos then loaded color slide film.

I was also at this show, however, I was working as a crew member on the cue card team. I believe I was about 40-60 feet back from the front row where you were. The cue cards were set up below the center camera. We worked with the Bob Hope shows every day for two weeks. If I am correct, General Westmoreland also attended this show. He sat back from the front, close to where we were set up.
Do you have any more photos? I am hoping you might have one of the cue cards and my fellow team members.

I was also there. I had been injured and was using crutches. I was on the wall. Do you have anymore information about this show or any photos?

I have been trying so long to see if I could get a copy of his show for that
year, but I understand his videos are in the archives. I did buy a DVD from Amazon
entitled “The Vietnam Years”. What I was looking for wasn’t in those clips. During that show 1970 at Long Binh my husband was in Vietnam
and they got a close up of just his face, because he was at the show also.
Is there any way of getting a copy of that show that you know of?
Thanks so much for any help.

Becky, I’m not sure if there is a video of that show. I know they probably compiled the various visits each year and did a TV special. I don’t recall which network would have run it, but one of them did. You might try the major TV networks. NBC, CBS, ABC, it had to be one of them. Also try DOD public affairs, they might be able to point you in the right direction.

I was the communications officer for Bob’s 1970 show at Long Binh.

I have a photo of the cue cards and the guys holding them. Contact me at the above address and I will send it to you.

I also have several photos of the Golddiggers and Miss World.
